Much richer styling, some examples:
- Borders around any element
- Set padding and margins around elements
- Change word and letter spacing
- Font-variant and text-transform: smallcaps, upper case, capitalize, lower case, ....
- Set backgrounds for any element
- Set background-image repeats, positions
- Positive and negative text indents
- ...
Easy to learn/use, much easier to maintain site
- Changing a single style can change the properties of all the text, or all the h1 headers, or all the list items in a unordered list, etc. on you whole site
HTML documents have more compact file size, load faster
- For example: you don't need a separate font tag everytime you want to change a font property from the default
Reuse styles on multiple pages/sites
- <link href="main.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
- @import url(page.html) or @import url(sheet.css)
The Cascade
- Styles assigned to parent elements cascade to descendant elements
  For example: styles assigned to the <body> element will (generally) be applied to the other elements in the body
Future
- If documents are well structured, other web devices can deploy appropriate stylesheets so the documents will display correctly (TVs, palm pilots, cell phones/pagers, smart watches, even vending machines, ...). See the initial splash page but with styles turned off.
- Many style tags have been deprecated in HTML 4.0 <font>, <basefont>, <u>, <strike>, <s>, <center> and others are highly recommended against: <b>, <i>, <big>, ...
