HTML

HTML was originally a very sparce language to describe the structure of a document

• Structural Elements
  • <p> paragraphs
  • <h1>, <h2>, ... headers
  • <blockquotes>
  • <ol>, <ul>, <dl> lists
• More presentation control was desired so presentation elements were added:
  • <b> Bold
  • <i> Italics
  • frames
  • <font size=... face=... color=...>
  • tables
  • ...

Now the movement is to return HTML back to structure only and use CSS for styles

HTML 2.0 -> HTML 3.2 -> HTML 4.0 -> HTML 4.01 -> XHTML -> XML
